At Pangbourne College, adventure has always been more than an activity. It is part of our identity.
For generations, Pangbournians have been encouraged to embrace challenge, step into uncertainty and discover what they are capable of when faced with the unfamiliar. Oli Knight, Head, explains, "In a world that often celebrates effortless success and instant achievement, we believe something profoundly different: that character is forged through challenge, resilience is built through setbacks and confidence grows when young people learn they can overcome difficulty."
We’ve seen this first hand in recent Old Pangbournian stories; Jess Rowe completing her incredible record-breaking Pacific Ocean Row, Frankie Allen winning Gold Medal in the Paralympics and Aaron Smyth completing the World’s toughest footrace for Charity - an inspiring example of determination, endurance and the lasting impact of the Pangbournian spirit.
Oli Knight remarks, "Adventure at Pangbourne is not simply about climbing ropes, navigating rivers or sleeping under canvas. It is about developing a mindset grounded in freedom, self-reliance and responsibility. It is about teaching young people what to do when they do not know what to do.
As educational thinker Seymour Papert famously observed, “there is only one 21st Century skill, and that is the ability to act intelligently when faced with a situation for which you have not been specially prepared.”
That philosophy sits at the heart of the Pangbourne adventure curriculum."
This term has seen Pangbourne pupils embrace that spirit of adventure in countless ways across our 230-acre campus. From archery and assault course training to high ropes, low ropes and paddleboarding on the lake, pupils have been challenged to push beyond their comfort zones, work collaboratively and develop resilience through both success and failure.
Importantly, these experiences provide opportunities not only to succeed, but also to struggle safely, reflect and grow. Whether falling from a high ropes element, navigating a difficult team challenge or learning from mistakes during an expedition, pupils begin to develop what we call their own “resilience story” - the personal understanding that setbacks are not endpoints, but stepping stones towards future success.
This approach is increasingly important in today’s world. Research continues to highlight the importance of young people developing emotional resilience and coping skills through manageable challenge. Oli Knight comments, "At Pangbourne, we believe adventure plays a vital role in helping pupils build confidence, self-belief and perspective. Our role as educators is not to remove every obstacle, but to support young people as they learn how to overcome them."
Alongside academic rigour, our four core pillars - Exploration, Community, Leadership and Academic Rigour - work together to develop pupils who are capable, adaptable and grounded. We want Pangbournians to leave us not simply with excellent grades, but as rounded, resilient and “un-automatable” young adults: individuals able to lead, collaborate, think critically and flourish in an imperfect world.
Celebrating Adventure This Term
This term has also seen us share our spirit of adventure with the wider community.
We were delighted to host our very first Prep Schools’ Challenge Morning, welcoming visiting pupils to experience Pangbourne’s adventure facilities firsthand. Teams competed across archery, low ropes and the assault course, demonstrating teamwork, communication and determination throughout the morning. Congratulations to Moulsford Prep School, who were crowned inaugural champions after a closely fought competition.
Following this, we welcomed local Prep Heads for our inaugural Prep Heads’ Challenge Afternoon alongside members of our Senior Leadership Team. Staff from Brockhurst and Marlston House School, Moulsford Prep School, St Andrew's School and Thorngrove School joined us for an afternoon of archery, high ropes and assault course challenges - proving that stepping outside your comfort zone is just as valuable for adults as it is for pupils.
These events perfectly captured what adventure at Pangbourne is all about: teamwork, connection, laughter, challenge and the confidence that comes from trying something difficult.
Looking Ahead
Adventure continues to grow at Pangbourne and we are excited about what lies ahead.
Next term, many of the activities pupils have enjoyed this year, including ropes courses, assault training, bushcraft and water-based activities, will become an even more embedded part of our activities programme.
We are also looking forward to the upcoming ‘Three Rivers Challenge’, an Inter-Divisional Adventure Triathlon, which will be held annually over three days in June. This endurance is a test of strength, teamwork and resilience - the event covers a total distance of 60 km and consists of three distinct disciplines, each aligned with a local river:
Tom Poynter, Assistant Head Co-Curricular states, "Our long-term vision is clear. We believe that challenge, exploration, belonging and connection to the natural world are essential to human flourishing. Through structured outdoor experiences and exposure to both success and setback, our pupils grow into confident, resilient and articulate young adults who can navigate an uncertain world with courage and purpose."
By the time they leave Pangbourne, we hope every pupil will:
Adventure at Pangbourne has always been about far more than the outdoors.
It is about preparing young people not simply for exams, but for life itself.
