Old Pangbournian Arron Smyth (1991–1998) has successfully completed one of the world’s most gruelling endurance challenges, raising awareness for two important charities close to his heart.

Arron, who joined Pangbourne College in 1991 from the Junior School under Mr Spriggs and served as CCCC in 1998, took on the Marathon des Sables Legendary - widely regarded as the toughest footrace on earth.

Marking its 40th anniversary this year, the race was the longest in its history, spanning an extraordinary 270km across six stages in the Sahara Desert. Competitors must be entirely self-sufficient, carrying all their food, equipment and medical supplies while navigating extreme terrain, including vast sand dunes, rocky plains and intense heat.

Arron undertook the challenge in aid of The Brain Tumour Society and Parkinson’s UK. His motivation was deeply personal: his father, who passed away from a brain tumour in the mid-2000s, had a strong connection to the College and its bluebells woods.

Despite suffering a serious foot injury by Stage 3, Arron demonstrated remarkable resilience, completing the remaining 180km in pain to reach the finish line.

Reflecting on the achievement, he credits his time at Pangbourne College for instilling the discipline and mindset needed to endure such a demanding challenge, as well as to overcome obstacles throughout life.

Arron’s accomplishment stands as an inspiring example of determination, endurance and the lasting impact of the Pangbournian spirit.
