The Wooden Horse and The Great Escape are two iconic British World War II films, but what is not so widely known is that one of the men involved in both of the escapes that inspired the films would go on to star in the Carry On movies.
Eighty years later, Peter Butterworth's recently uncovered German prison identity card will be on display as part of an exhibition telling the story of his life as a prisoner of war.
Butterworth, who appeared in over 15 Carry On films helped to hide sand from the escape tunnels as featured in the Great Escape and was a member of the organising committee for the tunnels depicted in The Wooden Horse, but it has taken nearly eight decades for his story to be told
For OP Tyler Butterworth, Peter's son, the story has been a revelation. To read more of Peter Butterworth's remarkable story please click on the link below
