Prior to sitting down to a two-course lunch, with a choice of menu, followed by mince pies and coffee, the OPs foregathered in the main bar for pre-lunch drinks. It was interesting to note that half of those attending had left Pangbourne to pursue a career at sea in either the Royal or Merchant Navies. They included three Rear Admirals, Mike Harris (1954-59), John Lang (1955-58) and Jeremy Sanders (1956-60), and
Robin Batt (1961-64), who was only the second OP to become The Master of theHonourable Company of Master Mariners.
As is now tradition, everyone changed round between the main and dessert courses. For such a relatively small group the noise level was remarkably high, as was the camaraderie between people who had shared a common start to their young lives at an institution of which they were immensely proud. Next year’s Christmas lunch has been booked for Monday 7th December.
