Christopher A. Brown (1952-55) died peacefully in a nursing home where he and his wife Kathy had lived for the last few years aged 88 on 28 September 2025 with his family around him. He is survived by the couple's four children and seven grandchildren.
Chris joined Union Castle Line from the NCP, serving as a cadet on cargo passenger ships on the South African run. He obtained his 2nd Mate’s Certificate in 1959. His first appointment as an officer was as Extra 4th Officer in the Edinburgh Castle. Later he served as 3rd Officer in the Roxburgh Castle and Rotherwick Castle in 1961 and 1962.
In August 1962 he joined the RNR as a Probationary Sub Lieutenant on a five-month course starting on HMS Victory with an introduction to the RN, followed by courses on Atomic Warfare, Damage Control, Navigation, Gunnery, Air Appreciation, Comms and Submarine Warfare. In 1963 he returned to Union Castle as 2nd Officer in the Rochester Castle - the year he married. His final seagoing promotion, having obtained his Master’s Certificate, was as Chief Officer of the Clan Mac Tavish in 1968 before ‘swallowing the anchor’ in 1969. He had served on 15 different ships.
On leaving the sea, Chris and Kathy went into farming at Witney, near Oxford
