Richard Hughes-Young (59-63), 2nd Lord St Helens, died at his home on 1st March 2025 aged 79. He left a son Henry and a daughter Lara. A memorial service will be held at 11:30am on 22nd May at Chelsea Old Church, Old Church Street, London SW3 5DQ.
Richard (also known as Rory) was the son of a former Army officer who became a Conservative MP after World War 2 and was given a hereditary peerage by the outgoing Douglas-Home government in 1964 after he lost his seat in the General Election that year. Richard inherited his peerage in 1980 following his father’s death but was excluded from the House of Lords in 1999 after constitutional reforms introduced by the Blair government.
At the Nautical College Richard was a member of Illawarra division and Form VI Modern. From the NCP it is believed that he entered the Army. We have no further details of his career or life.
