The Old Pangbournian sailing community was proudly represented at this year's Round The Island Race by Rohan, Jeremy and I joined by a fabulous crew. Our gratitude goes to Andy Roy OP for inviting us to race on Troubador, a Swan 46.
What began as a concerning weather forecast transformed into an exceptional racing experience when conditions moderated significantly in the 48 hours preceding the start. The race delivered everything we could have hoped for—23 knots of peak wind that perfectly suited Troubadors heavy weather capabilities, and remarkably, we remained dry for 95% of the event.
While this year's fleet was reduced by approximately 50% due to the initially unfavorable forecasts, those who participated were rewarded with spectacular sailing conditions around the Isle of Wight. The combination of challenging winds and dryish skies made for truly memorable racing.
Our successful completion with both crew and boat intact was followed by a dramatic finale as we returned to the yard. Mother Nature saved her most impressive display for last—35+ knot winds accompanied by thunder and lightning provided a fitting crescendo to our adventure. We rode out the storm with full sails and spirits soaring after our outstanding day on the water.
We are only sorry that Andy was unable to join us on this occasion but look forward to racing together soon.
The Round The Island Race continues to demonstrate why it remains one of the premier sailing events in the calendar, rewarding those bold enough to take on the Solent's challenges with unforgettable experiences.
