Obituaries

Gordon Anthony (George) Hogg (48-51), a retired Captain in the Royal Navy, died suddenly at his home near Padstow, Cornwall on June 16, 2021, aged 86. He left a wife Rosemary, four children and five grandchildren. “A great man missed by all his family and friends” stated a death notice in The Daily Telegraph.

At the Nautical College, Hogg was a Cadet Leader in Hesperus Division and was in Form Upper Va. Only 16, he took the Civil Service Commissioners’ Entry exam for the Royal Navy in June 1951, passed and gained entry into BRNC Dartmouth and the Electrical Branch of the Service in 1952.

Two years ago, George contacted the College to share news of his subsequent life. He wrote: “I am now at the end of two long and successful careers, firstly the Royal Navy (1952 to 1988), and secondly as a museum volunteer (1990 to 2017) when I retired as a founder member and longstanding Trustee of the National Maritime Museum Cornwall. In June this year (2019) I was awarded the Victory Medal from the Society for Nautical Research for my efforts to record and save historic ships and small craft. This is, I believe, a first for Pangbourne.”
