Pangbourne College owes its existence to the generosity of Sir Thomas Devitt who founded Pangbourne in 1917 to produce a better educated officer for merchant ships. Such people, in his view, had to be capable of total command of their little world as they sailed on their annual voyage around the globe, out of sight of everything; were it never possible to ring head office for orders.

Although the Founder’s purpose has changed, for over 100 years the College has educated boys and latterly girls to work hard, aim high and to foster lifelong friendships.

Pangbourne remains ‘Proud to be Different’ and in retaining much of its heritage still produces people who form a community where you can flourish.

As Pangbourne College was gearing up for its Centenary in 2017, it established a Development Office. The anniversary provided an excellent opportunity to highlight the current needs of the school; to celebrate successful alumni and to inspire current and future generations of Pangbournians.

Bursaries are already very much part of the College DNA, but perhaps not widely acknowledged or advertised. The College provides access to its education through the availability of means-tested bursaries for pupils who would otherwise not be able to attend Pangbourne.

Pangbourne currently supports 1 out of every 6 pupils through a range of means-tested bursaries from 10 - 100% remission on fees. This is an enviable position to be in but one that is now under increasing pressure as it can no longer be wholly financed by trading and fee income.

Securing additional funding to support such a large proportion of pupils is a priority - we are determined to continue to offer open access to pupils from all social and financial backgrounds as we believe this is a crucial element to Pangbourne’s identity.

Pangbourne is looking for committed donors who, dependent on their means, are able to give small, medium and large gifts to help support bursaries which will free up income to help fund Campus Development over the next few years.
