GEORGE G. ROBINS (41-44)

Obituaries

George G. Robins (41-44) died of pneumonia on January 4, 2021 as the OP Society was informed by his widow Pat. He was 93, was married for 65 years, had three sons and a daughter, and lived most of his life in southwest London.

At the NCP he was Chief Cadet Captain of Port Jackson Division in his final year and Captain of the Boxing team. From Pangbourne, he went into the Merchant Navy with T&J Harrison.

After remaining in the MN for some years, he came ashore, set up his own business and made a living as an inventor. In 1973 he won the Design Council’s Duke of Edinburgh award (for which the prize was then £200) to produce something original – in his case, an electric bicycle. Throughout his long life, he remained connected to the sea. According to his widow, “George was fit in mind and still sailing, which was merciful for us all and particularly for him.” He owned a Westerly boat and sailed out of the Hamble, often venturing through the French canal system and into the Mediterranean.

Noted for his generosity and kindness to others, George remained a lifelong friend of Michael S. Lavender Jones (41-45) and attended the latter’s funeral in St. Albans in 2019.
